As a New Landstar BCO
You will be assigned a Domicile Agency (unless you have requested one like 'RKY',
which is us). They are the people you are supposed to go to when you have a
problem, whether it's a silly problem like figuring out how to get blank paperwork,
or a serious problem with a TRL. You may have been an owner-operator for 20+ years,
but if you're new to Landstar, you can still use some help! And, if you're like me,
there ain't no such thing as too much help!
Now, I'm here to tell you that all Agencies are not equal! There are a ton of great
ones out there! But there are also some that are as new to Landstar as you! Ever
hear the phrase, "the blind leading the blind"? How bout being domiciled to an
agency that is a one horse show — sure, the husband is a Landstar BCO, been
one for 2 years now, and the wife runs the Agency, and she's got this plant down
the road a piece that moves 8-10 loads per month. I'm sure this Agency will really
try hard to help you, in any way they can!
But now, compare the above to the following, and tell me who you'd prefer to have
as your Domicile Agency?
The agent grew up in trucking, has been around Landstar for many years. The agency
is fairly new, only around bout 7 years or so now. But, the agency has multiple
retired Landstar Drivers working in it, is located at a truckstop near Canton, OH
(in the middle of the country), is one of the Top Ten Revenue Agencies at Landstar
(both this year, and multiple prior years). Has been named "Quality Service Agency
of the Year" twice (so far). This agency chases national account freight —
so they tend to have loads all over the country!
The DUV/RKY agencies have won numerous awards over the last few years from many
sources — Carrier of the Year — CSR of the year — many of the
employees have earned Landstar's Bronze (Silver, or Gold) Star of Quality. So
when it comes right down to it, who do you want to go to when you have a problem?
This is stuff to think about, that a lot of folks will never bother to tell you!
DUV is our freight side, and RKY is our Domicile side! Why? Because who you
Domicile with should never be about freight! I'll load you whenever you
want, as long as you make your check calls, and do what you say you're gonna do!
I hate surprises! I need my loads delivered on time, every time! And if you're
that kind of driver, I'd love for you to become a regular! Some domicile agencies
will try to tell you that you have to take their freight. Remember, no
forced dispatch at Landstar, right?
Sounds a touch fishy to me too.... If you domicile with RKY, you never ever
have to take a DUV load — that's not what domiciling is about at all,
and no, you do not need a domicile Agency close to home either — I mean,
think about it.... You drive all over the country, and your main contact method
is your cell phone, right?
