Safe Driver Week July 9 – 15, 2023

Safe driving is important for all on the road, especially owner-operators. As an owner-operator, you hold a responsibility always to prioritize safe driving. Safe Driver Week is a yearly event put together by law enforcement to help promote safe driving and help lessen accidents on the road. This event helps raise awareness about the risks of speeding, distracted driving, and other unsafe driving. Owner-operator safe driving is important to help maintain a successful trucking business and protect your life and those who share the road with you.

Preparing for Safe Driver Week

There are some tips for owner-operators who can prepare for a safe driving week to ensure you and those around you are safe.

Truck Maintenance – before hitting the road, do a complete vehicle inspection. You should check your brakes, tires, lights, and all other components to ensure they are in good working order.

Documentation – be sure to have all required paperwork, such as permits, licenses, and insurance, valid and easily accessible in your truck.

Training and Certification – stay current on all training and certifications to help grow your knowledge of safe driving practices.

Safe Driving Practices

Practice Safe Driving – to avoid distractions, focus on the road and avoid distractions such as phones, eating, or other activities that can take your eyes and focus off the road.

Follow Traffic Laws – follow all speed limits and pay attention to traffic signs and signals. To avoid aggressive driving, be sure to keep a safe following distance.

Use Turn Signals and Mirrors – be sure to use your turn signals in advance and check your mirrors often so you are more aware of your surroundings.

Pay Attention to Weather Conditions – adjust your driving according to the weather if needed. You may need to reduce your speed and use extra caution in rain, snow, and fog.

Avoid Fatigue – Be sure to plan your trips so you can take regular breaks and get enough rest and food to help prevent fatigue.

Using Technology for Safety

With Safe Driver Week quacking approaching, there are some technology systems to help you better your driving.

Telematics Systems – this system gives you real-time feedback on your driving techniques. This can help you identify areas where you need improvements.

Dash Cameras – you can install a dash cam on your vehicle to help capture any footage if an accident occurs. Dash cameras are valuable evidence to help protect yourself if you are not at fault.

Driver Assistance Systems – a driver assistance system such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, or collision avoidance can help enhance your safety while on the road.

Safe Driver Week reminds all owner-operators to prioritize safety on the road. Using the safe driving practices listed above can enhance your driving and help create a safe driving environment.
